What is a Visual Acuity Test?

Most people are familiar with the visual acuity test. This test is a very common one where you read letters or identify shapes from a chart on a wall. It’s used to determine the smallest size of letters you can just see or resolve.

By placing the chart at a standard distance and observing while you cover one eye at a time and attempt to correctly identify letters or shapes, an optometrist can measure your visual acuity. It is generally expressed as a fraction, like 20/20, which is standardised in feet, or more recently 6/6 which is in metres. The top number represents the actual distance, while the bottom represents the distance someone with “normal” vision can see that letter size.

Regular visual acuity tests are a quick and easy way to monitor your eye health.
